Mhmm! But, on the other hand, Grimm’s tales are so much darker than Disney’s are. What do you think of that?
I honestly like both- I like to enjoy a cheesy little movie full of songs and princesses and talking critters from Disney; I just wish that that wasn’t most peoples’ only impression of fairytales. I like the darkness of the Grimm’s tales because in reading them, and in looking at their formulaic framework and fashioning longer, larger narratives from them, you get to deal with real life, yet escape it at the same time. Which is exactly what I want in a good book. Implanted in dark realities, yet escaping them with magic, overcoming them, and making statements about humanity all the way.
On a practical level, the blunt absurdity of some of the gruesomest accounts make for an interesting, though brief, shock factor, that I don’t get from the relentless guts and gore that’s in our entertainment today. I’m numb to that stuff. But the Grimm’s tales almost re-awaken me to it.
